German mother and a father who was as good as bilingual, but they didn't bring me up speaking the language, so now, having recently acquired dual nationality, I am anxious to kick start speaking German. It's using the spoken language that is a problem. I'm a recently retired teacher of English, and in the distant past studied Russian to degree level.
